Flyers Lose,
Under Wins

January 3, 2012 -

When the Flyers’ Danny Briere failed to capitalize on his penalty shot with less than 20 seconds left in the Winter Classic on Monday, Philly fans were understandably disappointed.  However, the save by Rangers goalie  Henrik Lundqvist happened to also preserve what we identified as the better wagering side in yesterday’s game at Citizens Bank Park — the under for total goals.

The Rangers’ 3-2 win fell under the over-under total of 5 1/2 goals. To take the under, bettors were laying -130 to -140.  The Flyers were -125 favorites and the Rangers were +115 underdogs.

Typical for an outside game, there were a number of interruptions in play to repair the ice .  It was the unpredictable nature of the surface that made the under an attractive side. Still, it took some remarkable events for the under to survive.  In addition to Briere’s missed penalty shot, the Rangers’ Ryan Callahan had a chance to score on an open net with a little over a minute left in the third period but he got tangled up with the Flyers’ Kimmo Timonen and they both got sent off.
