The rodeo is returning to the Atlantic City boardwalk in October and tickets go on sale Friday, tourism officials announced this week.
Boardwalk Hall will host the rodeo at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 5 and at 1 p.m. on Oct. 6
The tickets are priced at $20, $30, $50, and $80 and come with a free cowboy hat when purchased between May 24 and May 31. Family four-packs (four tickets, four hot dogs, and four soft drinks) are available if purchased prior to Oct. 4.
Tickets can be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations by calling 800-736-1420 or at ticketmaster.com. For Group Sales call 609-348-7023.
The PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) sanctioned event, presented by Barnes PRCA Rodeo Company, will bring the biggest rodeo on the East Coast to Atlantic City, a press release stated.
Events include:
–Bareback Riding- Cowboys must ride a bucking horse for eight seconds, holding onto nothing but a single handhold rigging cinch
–Tie-Down Roping- A timed race which calls for a mounted cowboy to chase a calf down the arena and rope and tie the calf
–Saddle Bronc Riding- A test to see if a cowboy can stay in the saddle of a wild, unbroken horse for eight seconds
–Team Roping- Two riders must ride out and rope a steer in the fastest time.
–Barrel Racing- A cowgirl and her horse must complete a cloverleaf pattern around three
barrels within the quickest timeframe.
–Steer Wrestling- After dropping from their horse, the rider must wrestle a steer to the ground by the horns in an effort to stop the clock.
–Bull Riding- A cowboy must ride a bull for eight seconds while holding onto only a rope which is connected to the bull
“The PRCA is very happy to be returning to Atlantic City with the seven most exciting rodeo events in competition,” said John Barnes of Barnes Rodeo. “The best cowboys and cowgirls will be in town for both shows and we are all surely looking forward to a great time.”
In addition to the rodeo, children ages 8 and older on Saturday, October 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. will be able to participate in a camp that teaches safety and fundamentals, livestock safety, injury prevention, tips from pros, chute procedures, riding equipment overview, goal setting, and introduction to PRCA.

I certainly have not been shy about picking on the Phillies this year when putting together rosters for FanDuel.

But just yesterday I said that any pitcher facing the Marlins is worth a look.

So what happens tonight when the Phillies face the Marlins? I think it might be time to look for some value in the Phils roster.

Specifically, OF Domonic Brown can be on your roster for $2,700, a good price for an outfielder. He went 0 for 4 yesterday, but did steal a base when he got on. He is already 2 for 2 this year against Alex Sanabia. That is jsut part of the .393 BA Sanabia is yielding to left handed hitters.

Which benefits Phillies 2B Freddy Galvis ($2,600), too, since he is a hitting .350 from the left hand side of the plate this year. 3B Michael Young is not left handed, but he went 2 for 3 against Sanabia a couple of weeks ago and is available for only $2.600 also.

That would seem to be good reason to use Cole Hamels tonight also for $7,100. He is certainly capable of shutting a team down when he is on.

For only $600 more, Shelby Miller is available against the Padres. Miller is striking out more batters than Cole, and the Padres strike out more often than the Marlins. Of course, the Padres actually have an offense, unlike the Marlins, so I would not blame anyone for taking Hamels tonight.

And of course, with those cheap Phils on the roster, it may be possible to go get P Clayton Kershaw.

A couple other notes, including a pair of teams capable of putting up runs, the Reds and Rangers:

Reds 1B Joey Votto is 5 for 9 against Sean Marcum and will draw $4,300 in salary. Reds SS Cesar Izturis is also 5 for 9 against Marcum and only costs $2,300.

Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre ($4,400) is a .317 hitter with an unreal .683 slugging average against Bartolo Colon in 60 AB. Beltre has 8 hits in his last 13 at bats. He may be worth the top money tonight.

Yankees OF Vernon Wells ($3,500) is 7 for 16 against Freddy Garcia.

PokerStars’ on-again off-again bid for the Atlantic Club is off again.

The online card room saw its bargain basement bid for the Atlantic Club go awry yet again on Friday, when an Atlantic County Superior Court judge ruled the ailing casino was free to entertain new offers.

The ruling comes on the heels of another court decision to issue a temporary restraining order that prohibited the Atlantic Club from trying to make a deal with any buyer other than the Rational Group, PokerStars’ parent company.

Rational sought to purchase the Atlantic Club for a total of $15 million as part of a deal reached in December with the Atlantic Club’s current owners. After PokerStars put some $11 million of the total purchase price toward supporting the casino’s daily operating costs, the purchase agreement expired and the current ownership, led by Colony Capital, LLC., declined to extend it.

Colony is reportedly seeking the remaining $4 million of the purchase price as a termination fee.

While the Atlantic Club has struggled financially for years, it became valuable to PokerStars when intrastate Internet gambling was legalized in New Jersey. Under the state’s online gaming law, operators must have a brick and mortar presence in New Jersey in order to be eligible for licensure.

A spokesman for PokerStars told news outlets the company remains committed to New Jersey.

While there is no shortage of struggling casinos to pursue in Atlantic City, the company faces stiff competition for a gaming license. The American Gaming Association, which represents the nation’s largest “traditional” casino companies as the industry’s largest trade association, has argued to state regulators that allegations of bank fraud, money laundering and other charges made against PokerStars by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in 2011 make the company unsuitable for licensure.

PokerStars paid more than $500 million to settle the case with the DOJ, and the company admitted no wrongdoing. PokerStars had expressed a willingness to invest some $40 million to improve the Atlantic Club after the purchase closed.

It is clear that anyone pitching against the Marlins is worth a look. Last night Brandon McCarthy, who had been struggling, pitched a complete game against them. The team has already been shut out 8 times this year in 42 games, a remarkable 19% of the time.

In May, the Marlins have scored more than three runs just three times – against the Dodgers’ Matt Magill, against the Mets’ Dillon Gee, and against Roy Halladay’s busted up shoulder.

The only problem with this is that others are also thinking this way, and it is now factored into the price of pitching at a site like FanDuel. Today Arizona P Wade Miley will draw $6,900 in salary. Doug Fister, who averages over 2 points per more per start according to FanDuel costs only $6,400.

Still, it is worth a thought until the Marlins start hitting like a major league team (should be sometime in 2015).

If you are looking for a sleeper, though, Padres P Andrew Cashner ($5,700) is worth a look. He has been good in his last couple outings (though granted one was against the Marlins), the Nats strike out a lot, and Dan Haren is on the mound for the Nats, not looking sharp.

Also, a pair of cheap position player options from the WhiteSox – 1B Paul Konerko ($2,800) is on a 4 game hit streak, has hits in 7 of his last 10, and is 7 for 13 lifetime against Justin Vargas. SS Alexei Ramirez ($2,800) has hit in 6 of 7 games, including three multi-hit games, and he is 7 for 15 lifetime against Vargas.

Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen has three multi-hit games in a row but is still only $3,700. Today ‘Cutch and gets to face Astros Lucas Harrell today. In one game previous he went 2 for 3 against Harrell.

Tonight is A.J. Burnett bobblehead night at PNC Park. Burnett has been great for the Pirates, and facing the Astros lineup and their propensity to strikeout tonight, it could be a good night for Burnett, available for $7,200 at FanDuel for your daily fantasy roster.

I think there are some good bargains available to help manage a roster with that salary, including a pair of young Marlins. Brandon McCarthy will pitch for Arizona tonight, and he has been yielding a 1.54 WHIP and is being hit over .300 by both lefties and righties. 2B Derek Dietrich ($3,000) has cooled off a bit, but has till been hitting well since coming up. And OF Marcell Ozuna ($3,100) has warmed up again with 5 hits in his last 19 at-bats.

Cardinals SS Pete Kozma ($2,220) is on 4 game hit streak, and has a hit against Estrada in 5 at bats. Cardinals C Yadier Molina ($3,300) has hits in 8 of his last 10, and is 8 for 15 career versus Estrada.

Right around an average price, Atlanta’s 3B Chris Johnson ($3,400) is ona 3 game hit streak, and is 4 for 15 career facing Chris Capuano with 3 extra-base hits.

More expensive but probably excellent value tonight is back in Pittsburh. OF Andrew McCutchen ($3,700) is 5 for his last 10, and gets to hit against Eric Bedard. He has not faced the lefty before, but Bedard is seeing righties slug .589 against him this year.

And getting back to the Cardinals, OF Matt Holliday ($4,100) is 6 for 12 facing Estrada, with a double and a home run. Holliday also has hits in 8 of his last 10 games.

After that, the fun really starts: The Breakfast Buffet on the beach will be available daily starting June 27. Nothing like a buffet on the beach after an all-nighter in the casino.

The 21,500 square foot outdoor party area will feature live music, DJ’s and chilled cocktails all day and night. Then there’s the food: Buffalo Chicken Dip, Bang Bang Shrimp and Steamers, Caribbean Shrimp Salad, Fried Fish and Chips, the Beach Bar Cheeseburger.

The price includes a $2 discount with a Trump One players club card, and like all similar players club cards it’s free to pick up one of those in the casino.

The new bargain-priced buffet begins June 5, and will be offered Wednesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner. Check at the casino for specific start and close times. The value-priced buffet is a smart move for the Plaza that’s been struggling lately.

The menu will change daily and feature hot and cold dishes, a soup of the day and desserts.

Typical items …

Cold
Mixed green salad and a Caesar salad with all the fixings; Mexican corn salsa, red bliss potato, fusilli pasta salad, creamy cole slaw and Harvard beet salad.

Hot
Carving station with roast turkey and ham, Chipotle chicken, Casino crusted salmon, mussels marinara, summer vegetable medley, rigatoni carbonara, saffron rice pilaf, along with meat balls, sausages, mac and cheese, red bliss mashed potato, and old fashion sage stuffing.

Jeffrey Hartmann, Revel’s interim CEO, performed a nifty bit of multi-tasking as he testified before New Jersey’s Casino Control Commission this week. In making his case for why the commissioners should approve the struggling resort’s Chapter 11 restructuring plan, Hartmann managed to spear a hefty slice of humble pie with one hand while shoving predecessor Kevin DeSanctis squarely under the bus with the other.

“Everyone deserves a second chance. We’re looking for a second chance,” the Press of Atlantic City quoted Hartmann as telling the commissioners at one point during the hearing.

But as he forked in the bitter baked goods with his left hand, he made a fluid shoving motion toward DeSanctis with his right. The interim CEO, who took the post from DeSanctis in March, was quoted by the newspaper as saying:

“We are trying to listen and respond to customers. We probably didn’t do a great job of that last year.”

And while that may seem subtle, or at least diplomatic, consider this description of the proceedings from Press of Atlantic City staffer Donald Wittkowski:

“The hearing was marked by extraordinarily candid testimony from Hartmann about Revel’s operating and marketing blunders during its crucial start-up months. The $2.4 billion casino hotel opened amid great promise in April 2012 but quickly became a huge flop.”

DeSanctis, as the former CEO, has to be seen as chiefly responsible for the casino’s approach and operations during most of its first year.

Shortly after Hartmann was named interim CEO in March, we drafted an open letter to him that listed 10 things that should be done to reverse the mistakes that had been made in the resort’s first 12 months of operation.

Based on the testimony Hartmann and Dennis Stogsdill, Revel’s chief restructuring officer, gave during this week’s hearing, it appears they recognize some of the biggest issues facing the property.

For starters, they’re going to open a reasonably priced restaurant. Hallelujah.

They also intend to look beyond young hipsters when building out their entertainment calendar. Good idea. Beyonce and Rihanna are undeniably talented and boast strong followings, but they don’t drive the traditional Atlantic City customer through the doors. And it’s a fair guess that those types of performers are expensive.

According to this week’s testimony, Revel executives also plan to allow smoking on a portion of the casino floor. While that will annoy a vocal minority, it is the right move from a business perspective.

In short, the testimony indicates Revel executives plan to be less exclusionary in their policies moving forward. We’re hoping that’s true.

As we’ve written many times, we think Revel is an architectural marvel with enormous appeal and potential. It just needs to stop acting like the prettiest girl in school, turning down any prom invitation that doesn’t come from the captain of the football team.

Apparently, the members of the Casino Control Commission feel the same way. They voted 3-0 to approve Revel’s restructuring plan.

When playing daily fantasy sports at FanDuel, a key skill is being able to build a roster using the available salary cap.

Players cost money. Players in demand cost more money than others. With a $35,000 salary cap, if you spend $7,000 on a pitcher (a relatively modest amount) that leaves an average of $3,500 for eight position players. $3,500 is a median kind of salary. A player getting a lot of hype like Brewers SS Jean Segura is going to cost $5,000 tonight. Top pitchers like Justin Verlander are going to cost $9,900.

Sometimes you may feel compelled to buy into one of those expensive players, but the key is to find cheaper players to afford that player. See what I did to get Mets stud pitcher Matt Harvey on Sunday, for example.

To do this, you will need underpriced players. To find them, I like to look at the day’s starting lineups for teams with favorable matchups (that is, they are facing a struggling pitcher) and looking for bargains. This is how I picked up the Reds Donald Lutz Sunday in my Matt Harvey roster.

Tonight, I think Red Sox P Felix Doubront is relatively weak. Looking at the Rays lineup, Zobrist and Longoria are known names, but Sean Rodriguez is not. That is a guy to check out. He is playing LF and batting 7th. FanDuel lists him as SS Sean Rodriguez ($2,600). That is a great price. He has hit in his last four games, and is 3 for 9 in his career against Doubront. That is a guy I want to pick up.

Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez ($2,800) is cheap because he has not been hitting well this year. When he does hit it comes in streaks, though. He has already seen Hiram Burgos just two weeks ago and went 1 for 3 with a HR. Again, this could be a spot to save some money. I would prefer to do it at a defensive position like SS with Rodriguez, but the option is there.

Still sticking with traditional power positions, Nationals 1B Adam La Roche ($2,700) is another find. He has not been great this year. But he is riding a 12 game hit streak, and managed a HR last night. Plus he is 5 for 14 against Edinson Volquez, who is walking more batters than striking out lately.

Mariners OF Jason Bay is no where near a 12 game hit streak. But he went 2 for 4 two days ago, is a .400 lifetime hitter against Andy Petitte, and is available for $2,800.

Even better, leftie OF Xavier Paul ($2,500) gets to face a rightie in Miami. He has not been great this year, but he is more consistent than Bay. His problem is getting in the lineup, which he only does against righthanders. He’s cheap because he gets in games a lot in pinch hit spots, and so has a low average point per game number. But when he starts, Paul can be a good buy.

Not the sexiest names, but if you want Reds P Mat Latos ($8,200) against the putrid Marlins tonight (and I know, I do) then that is what you need to do to build a lineup.
