January 17, 2013 -

At least two Philadelphia-area poker pros are in the field of NBC’s National Heads-Up Poker Championship being played this month.

Matt Glantz, of Lafayette Hill, and Johnny Hennigan, formerly from South Philadelphia, are among 32 confirmed players in the field of 64.

The heads-up tournament, which  features players competing one-against-one in brackets similar to the NCAA basketball tournament and has a $20,000 buy-in, will be played and filmed on Jan. 24-26 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

The tournament will be broadcast on NBC and NBC Sports beginning March 14, according to news reports. The championship match will be televised on NBC on April 20.

The Heads-Up Championship, which started in 2005, returns after the event was cancelled in 2012. The tournament had previously been sponsored by Internet poker companies. This year, the World Series of Poker and WSOP.com is the new presenting sponsor.

The World Series of Poker and Caesars Palace are owned by Caesars Entertainment.

The defending champion from 2011 is Eric Seidel.  A number of notable players have won the event.  Besides Seidel, who was also the runner-up in 2010, some of the winners have been Phil Hellmuth, Annie Duke, Huck Seed, Chris Ferguson and Ted Forrest.
