Each week Steve Lienert and Steve Grantz pick three games against the spread. This column will track their cumulative records and also give the running total of how they would fare at Delaware Park putting in $10 each week on a parlay bet and for the fun of it, a 6-point teaser. Delaware Park does not post live odds, so the column will be using the consensus odds from Covers.com if PhillyGambles cannot get out to the sportsbook.
Every year, Steve Lienert hosts a stadium conditions party.
He picks a winter date when the Eagles are on the road, sets up a projector screen in his backyard, sets up his row of seats from old Veterans Stadium, and invites friends to watch the Birds in outdoor, stadium conditions. Of course, the beer is better, and the impressive spread of meatballs and pork sandwiches are not typical stadium food. And the mood is great.
It also means a lot of prep and a relative lack of time for making NFL picks.
But Steve was good enough to step away from the work putting together his 11th annual outdoor extravaganza to on the phone and communicate his picks. Starting with the subject of the stadium conditions party.
Philadelphia +6.5 at the New York Giants. The Eagles match up well against the Giants. Andy Reid is going to want to go out a winner, and Michael Vick is auditioning for an NFL job next year. It is going to drop the Eagles about 4 slots in the 2013 draft, but I like them to win this game.
New Orleans -4 vs Carolina. This team must feel like they would be a playoff team if they only had Sean Payton walking the sidelines this year. What better way to celebrate his new contract than to put on a show in the last home game of the year.
Green Bay -3 at Minnesota. You might think the Packers have nothing to play for here, but NFL pre-game shows today highlighted that all week long the Packer defense has had team dinners at various players houses, watching game film. Adrian Peterson has been talking smack about getting 200 yards and the rushing record. And even if Aaron Rodgers rests, remember that it was the final game last year that saw Matt Flynn go off for 6 TD passes.
Atlanta -3 vs Tampa Bay. The Falcons may rest offensive palyers, but the defense will play, and the Bucs have been bad the past few weeks. New Orleans does not shut out anyone, but they managed it against the Bucs two weeks ago. Atlanta has a bye week coming up, so they won’t make this a rest game.
Chicago -3 at Detroit. This is a playoff game for Chicago, and meaningless except for stats on the Detroit side. When they met earlier in the year, Detroit coughed up teh ball 3 times. The Bears defense will will them into winning this.
Seattle -12 vs St Louis. St Louis is inconsistent. That is not a reason to give them 12 points. But Seattle is playing possibly their last home game of the year, and they are doing something special today.
